The Department of Foreign Affairs announced that Miriam Defensor Santiago has won as judge in the International Criminal Court.
She was the first Asian woman to be elected out of 18 candidates and to join as a judge in the Netherlands-based international court.
The International Criminal Court is an independent permanent court
that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern like genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
She topped the poll’s first round and gained a seat with 79 votes out of 104 valid votes, an indication of the strong support from States Parties.
