Singer Barry Manilow came out of the closet on April 5, 2017, at the age of 73.
Barry kept silent on his four-decade relationship with a man to avoid disappointing fans.
He is best known for his love ballad ‘Mandy’ and Latin-tinged pop number ‘Copacabana (at the Copa)’.
The singer confirmed his sexuality two years after gossip media discovered his marriage to his manager.
He thought he would be disappointing them if the fans knew that he was gay. So he never did anything, Manilow said.
He is now grateful to have wonderful fans supporting him.
Barry had a devoted and largely female fan base at the height of his career, and whom his sexuality gradually became an open secret.
Barry was married to a woman he dated in high school but their relationship ended because he was too young to settle down, not because of his questions about his sexuality.
He met Kief, then a television executive, in 1978 and he knew that, he was the ‘one.’
Barry said he was one of the lucky ones. He was pretty lonely before that, Barry added.
Barry and Garry, who is also his business manager, have been together for almost 40 years since their first meeting in 1978.
Manilow achieved his greatest fame in the 1970s, years before pop stars were comfortable in being openly gay.
In recent years, he has become a leading attraction in Las Vegas where he has had several running shows.
